Travelling is a wonderful thing. It exposes you to many new experiences. I want talk about breakfast. Don’t get me wrong I have eaten many wonderful things for breakfast on previous travels and in my own kitchen at home. But I had forgotten about the variety foods you can have for breakfast and how they vary country to country. We started in Denmark where breakfast was a buffet. It is important to know that there was cereal however most of it had chocolate in it. Always Coco pops which the kids took great delight in serving into their bowls. The buffet that followed was a selection of meats, cheeses lettuce, boiled egg and array of breads from pumpernickel through to regular white. But no buffet would be complete without the breakfast cake of which Hamish had multiple sizes every day. There was coffee – not bad coffee – but not great either. On to Sweden with more amazing bread, sliced meat, cheeses and condiments for making breakfast delicious. Germany was much the same however their bread was so amazing. One bread in particular blew our minds. It was a salted pretzel apparently it’s bathed in an alkaline substance before it is baked. Amsterdam is next. The coffee is bad there – really bad. Maybe we went to the wrong places. The kids where unhappy as there was no chocolate cereal but parents on the other hand were happy. Moving on to Italy we had our apartment so we went to the supermarket where we struggled to buy cereal without chocolate, although we did manage. Each morning Anthony prepared an amazing bowl of muesli with yoghurt and fruit to get us ready for the day. We also purchased bread to have toast similar to what we had at home. As we moved to Venice and Florence we had amazing pastries for breakfast. A huge array of different types of pastries, including chocolate and fruit and some good coffee again. We also often had ham and cheese croissant‘s for breakfast, trying to keep up the protein that we have enjoyed in previous countries. Vence has continued the trend towards pastries but in an attempt to have similar breakfasts to home, the chocolate in cereal has returned.
